TOIDZE, I. Utmost Effort on the Home Front to Help the Front!, 1943
Vse sily tyla — na pomosh frontu! [Utmost Effort on the Home Front to Help the Front!], a poster by Iraklii Toidze (1902-1985, People's Artist of the Georgian SSR). Iskusstvo, Moscow-Leningrad, 1943, 43 x 58 cm.
Toidze, the artist of the iconic Rodina-mat' zovet [The Motherland Calls], was hailed by Soviet critics as a master of the “epic style” of visual propaganda. The artist came to Moscow after graduating from the Tbilisi Art Institute (class of 1930), and quickly rose to prominence both as a poster artist and book illustrator. Between 1941 and 1951, he was awarded an unprecedented four(!) Stalin Prizes — some for his graphics and some for paintings featuring the Great Leader.
