KORETSKY, V. The Union of Science and Labor Guarantees a Great Harvest, 1948
Soyuz nauki i truda — Zalog vysokhikh urozhayev! [The Union of Science and Labor Guarantees a Great Harvest], a poster by Viktor Koretsky (1909-1998, Meritorious Artist of the Russian Federation). Iskusstvo, Moscow, 1948, 53.5 x 70 cm.
Ironically, publication of this poster was likely prompted by the triumph of Trofim Lysenko, President of the Academy of Agricultural Science, over his opponents in the dispute over the role of genetics in agricultural research. For a brief period in 1948, Lysenko's critics found a patron in Yurii Zhdanov, the head of the Central Committee's Science Sector, but they were forced to recant after Stalin sided with Lysenko. Genetic research was banned, and scientists were purged for daring to question Lysenko's ``Creative Socialist Darwinism`` theory. The theory promised, among other things, to develop high yield crop varieties by subjecting several generations of seeds to cold and moisture before planting. The detrimental effects of the Stalin's fateful decision on Soviet biology and agriculture were felt for many years to come.
